Baker Park is about to get its most significant upgrade in years, with a new multi-purpose court bringing pickleball, basketball, netball and a rebound wall to one of the suburb’s most-used local parks before the end of 2026.

Construction begins in late 2026, with the completed court expected to open by year’s end.

A new space for sport and recreation

The court includes two full-size pickleball courts marked out through line marking, giving the space flexibility for multiple uses at once. Back-to-back basketball hoops with backboards allow more than one game to run simultaneously, which anyone who has waited around for a court to free up will appreciate.

The addition of a netball hoop and dedicated line markings encourages more women and girls to use the space for casual practice.

A 7-metre-long, 2.5-metre-high rebound wall also gives players a flexible training surface for a variety of sports and ball skills.

A mural coming with it

The rebound wall will carry original artwork as part of Randwick’s First Coat mural program, which has previously brought public art to streets and structures across the eastern suburbs.

The inclusion of art alongside sport reflects the design brief that came directly from the community — a space that feels welcoming to everyone, not just committed players.

Shaped by local voices

The final design came from a 2025 consultation process that included a workshop with young people from a local high school, plus input from residents across Coogee.

Feedback consistently pointed toward spaces for casual shooting and sport, equipment for a range of activities and an environment that felt inclusive rather than intimidating.

Bench seating is included so spectators, parents and park users who just want to sit and watch have somewhere comfortable to do it.

Pickleball — the sport worth knowing about

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in Australia and one of the fastest in the world, combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong on a compact court.

It suits all ages and fitness levels, requires minimal equipment and is easy to learn — making it a practical addition to a park used by a wide cross-section of the Coogee community.
