Coogee’s early mornings have transformed in recent years. As the sun rises, so does a vibrant community of runners, the Coogee Run Club.
The club, which was founded in 2022 by Tara Meakins after her relocation from London, has experienced phenomenal growth. It now boasts over 2,500 members who gather weekly for coastal runs.
Meakins says their first run had one participant, but now they include over 2500. The club’s largest gathering saw 255 people in January, a testament to the New Year’s resolution spirit.
The expansion of run clubs has been fueled by the recent surge in popularity across Australia. Meakins believes the pandemic played a crucial role, as people sought connection and community after the lockdown.
The Coogee Run Club emphasises the social aspect, fostering camaraderie among like-minded individuals. Meakins explains that it’s always been about connecting and making the most of the day.
Kellanova commissioned a recent study to commemorate Kellogg’s centennial, which revealed that a third of Australians wake up early to exercise. The study highlights the trend towards early morning lifestyles, with many prioritising sport and exercise before 6:00 a.m.
These findings resonate with Meakins’ experience. Post-run gatherings at local cafes for coffee and breakfast foster a sense of belonging. She emphasises that it’s not just about the run; it’s about connecting over breakfast. The combination of exercise, social interaction, and sunrise views creates a unique appeal, attracting a diverse membership, including many from outside Sydney.
It transcends a mere exercise group, becoming a surrogate family for many members living away from home. Meakins observes that running together five times a week creates a strong bond.
Gina Levy, Kellanova ANZ’s senior nutrition manager, links the growing trend towards early mornings to an increased focus on health and wellbeing. The importance of a nutritious breakfast is undeniable, with over 85 per cent of Australians recognising its value.
Dr Levy emphasises Kellanova’s commitment to providing nutritious breakfast options that support a healthy lifestyle. As the Coogee Run Club exemplifies, early mornings are becoming synonymous with community, connection, and a focus on well-being.
