Where to Eat in Coogee: From Beachfront Dining to Hidden Local Favourites

Coogee has built a dining scene that punches well above its beach-suburb reputation, with everything from a celebrated fine diner overlooking the sand through to a hole-in-the-wall banh mi spot that regularly draws a queue down the street.

The suburb carries genuine range, from serious wine bars to casual takeaways, across a strip that rewards locals who bother to look past the obvious tourist spots.

The headline dining experience

Mimi’s at the Coogee Pavilion stands as the suburb’s most celebrated restaurant, a fine diner on the middle floor with arched windows looking directly out to the beach. Instead of a standard tasting menu, the kitchen delivers a premium, high-end Mediterranean à la carte format that centers on pristine seafood and housemade pasta.

Diners can splash out on a Caviar Service ranging from $70 to $445, try the hand-rolled Mafaldine with sea urchin for $52, or opt for the table-filleted Market Fish of the Day, which usually sits around the $75 to $110 mark.

SUCH a nice place for an occasion! I’m Greek and the Mediterranean options were wonderful. Great mocktails too. Would love to see more hearty vegan options

For something equally considered but less formal, Yana on Coogee Bay Road has built a stellar reputation around open-fire cooking and genuinely warm hospitality. Chef Sam Lane builds the menu almost entirely around flame, charging $10 for his wood-fired housemade focaccia with honey butter and $23 for the charred woodfire octopus with kipfler potato.

A truly great experience, not just from the food but also from the exceptional customer service. The bartender and waiter, with his sweet appearance and kind demeanor, made our day. His attentiveness and warmth added so much to our visit. The tuna tartare and scallops were good—so fresh and full of flavor. Huge thanks to the amazing staff for their hospitality. I was truly impressed by his kindness!

Italian on a Tuesday night

Louie serves as Coogee’s Italian-inflected neighbourhood restaurant on Arden Street, the kind of spot that fills up mid-week without needing a special occasion. The kitchen spins out seasonal snacks, house-stretched flatbreads, and fresh pastas, with main plates and share items ranging from $28 to $45, all backed by an excellent list of natural wines.

Our favourite restaurant in Coogee – a MUST visit! My partner took me here for Valentine’s Day – everything from the food, service and drinks were fantastic. I would recommend the beef tartare dish, and all the pastas were fantastic. It was also very reasonably priced for the quality of the food, location and service. This will definitely become a go to restaurant for us.

Osteria Coogee covers similar territory with a slightly more relaxed feel. The kitchen focuses on modern Italian classics designed to share, including their 18-hour fermentation Focaccia for $6, a creamy Porcini and Truffle Gnocchi for $28, Spaghettoni Carbonara with guanciale for $36, and a hefty 600g Roasted Porchetta for $62.

Absolutely loved the food here! The prawn pasta and the gnocchi was soo good!
Also the tiramisu is one of the best I’ve tried in ages! Shout out to the lovely Brazilian gentleman, sorry didn’t get his name but the service was impeccable. Would definitely come back here again.

Wine, seafood and a front bar worth knowing

Coogee Wine Room takes things in a Mediterranean direction with a massive 400-label wine list, pairing excellent drops with Sydney Rock Oysters for $6.50 each, Alaskan King Crab Pasta for $38, and a premium MBS 5+ Wagyu Rump Cap for $46. The front bar works beautifully for an unstructured evening.

My wife and I enjoyed a weekend dinner at the CWR. Both of our mains were outstanding (pasta dish and lamb) and the desert we had was phenomenal (apple tarte Tatin). The venue has an excellent wine selection and the service was friendly and professional. All up an excellent dining experience.

Rick Stein at Coogee Beach brings one of Britain’s most recognisable seafood names to the ground floor of the InterContinental. The menu focuses almost entirely on fresh catch sourced daily from the Sydney Fish Market, featuring local Sashimi for $28, Rick’s famous Fish Pie for $38, and Singapore Blue Swimmer Crab served at market price.

Every part of this experience was memorable The service, the flavours, the atmosphere were all exceptional. Giovanni, the Sommelier, was so very helpful and knowledgeable guiding us to the best wine pairings to complement the dishes. It was so good we went back to try more of the awesome menu.

Loved the starters bc they were so refreshing after the walk. We had the prawn cakes, king fish sashimi, and the salmon ceviche lettuce cups. Yum yum!

Lox in a Box handles traditional Jewish-style bagels with sustainably sourced salmon. Their legendary Lox Classic—loaded with salmon, cream cheese, capers, and red onion—costs $18, while a simpler Jalapeño Popper Schmear bagel goes for $12.

Great way to start your saturday morning. The brekkie bagel is my go to, and the brisket is awesome. Massive shout out to Marina who is clearly very knowledgable about the products, gives good recommendations…and most importantly is polite and welcoming!

For coffee and something lighter, Penelope Bakery functions as a cult micro-bakery and panini bar, drawing crowds for its Original Cinnamon Scrolls ($12), the massive Penelope Signature Panini (prosciutto, burrata, rocket, and fig glaze for $26), and their Iced Strawberry Matcha ($11.50).

We ordered three cinnamon rolls — the original, the Bueno, and the Pistachio — and they were the most delicious rolls we’ve ever had. Warm, soft, and rich in flavor, every bite was incredible. The staff were also very welcoming and friendly. We would 100% recommend!

Coffeeroom Coogee, located at the south end of the beach, serves single-origin espresso and milk coffees ($5.00–$6.50), alongside fresh sourdough toasties ($14–$18) and premium local pastries ($7–$10) in a clean, Scandinavian-style fit-out.

Followed this place after their amazing social content (props to whoever looks after that 👏). Maybe I had higher hopes because of this. It was still good but I didn’t think it was anything amazing. Had nicer coffee & food in Sydney on my trip. Still nice to see, it is a cool cafe.

The Little Kitchen on Arden Street opens from 6am daily for café classics in a relaxed room that never tries too hard. Early risers can grab Smashed Avocado on sourdough for $19, Buttermilk Pancakes for $22, or a classic Big Breakfast for $25 to $28.

This has quickly become one of my favourite cafes, because of their food, coffee, and service – which is all consistently exceptional. I normally stick to the delicious pulled lamb with pita bread, but special call-out today to new chef Gabby, who created this salmon ceviche cannelloni dish – yum!
