More Than 1000 Swimmers Join Coogee Beach Swim-Out For Leah Stewart

More than 1000 swimmers returned to the water at Coogee Beach for a community swim-out in support of Leah Stewart and her family, just days after the shark attack that left the mother and primary school teacher in a critical condition.

Swimmers entered the water at Coogee Beach on Sunday, 21 June, for a community swim-out supporting Leah Stewart and her family after the June 13 shark attack that left the mother and primary school teacher in a critical condition, bringing swimmers, families and onlookers back to the beach just over a week after she was attacked while swimming close to shore.

The swim-out was arranged to help people return to the ocean after the incident, while also raising funds and support for Stewart and her family.

Some participants went in for a brief dip, while others swam across the bay or towards Wylie’s Baths. Many others stayed on the sand and cheered from the shoreline.

Before the swim began, families were seen embracing near the water, while parents reassured children as the crowd prepared to enter the ocean.

Safety Crews Support The Coogee Swim-Out

Extra safety measures were in place throughout the morning.

Drone surveillance, jet skis, inflatable rescue boats, board paddlers and lifeguards were used to support swimmers as they returned to the water. Lifeguards were also positioned in the ocean before the community swim began.

Lifeline volunteers attended the event to provide support for anyone affected by the shark attack.

The swim-out finished about 9:30 am and was followed by a community barbecue.

Fundraising For Leah Stewart And Her Family

The barbecue sold out, with proceeds going towards Stewart and her family.

Coogee Surf Life Saving Club said about $13,500 was raised through the event to help support Stewart’s recovery and her family. A further $4,000 in GoFundMe donations was contributed around the swim-out, taking support linked to the morning to more than $17,000.

A broader online fundraiser set up for Stewart and her family had raised more than $460,000.

Stewart was swimming close to shore at Coogee Beach on June 13 when she was attacked by a great white shark.

She was rescued by off-duty lifeguard Charlie Verco and airlifted to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition. She later had her arm amputated because of the severity of her injuries.

Her brother said earlier in the week that she remained in intensive care and on life support after extensive surgery.

Messages Of Support Along The Shoreline

After the swim-out, community members shared messages wishing Stewart well and thanking those involved in organising the morning.

The event centred on a return to the water, visible support from the shore and practical help for Stewart and her family as her recovery continues.
