Coogee shark attack survivor Leah Stewart is awake, alert and no longer in a critical condition, with her family saying she faces further surgery and an extensive rehabilitation process.
Leah Stewart Stabilised After Coogee Shark Attack
Coogee local Leah Stewart has been stabilised and is no longer in a critical condition after suffering severe injuries in a shark attack at Coogee Beach.
Ms Stewart was attacked on June 13 while swimming close to shore and within the flags at Coogee Beach. She sustained multiple bites to her arms and legs, as well as lacerations, fractures and extreme blood loss.
The Sydney mother and teacher was placed on life support after the attack and underwent multiple operations in the days that followed. Her treatment has included the amputation of her arm, with further surgery and rehabilitation still ahead.
Her family said she has now been brought out of heavy sedation and is awake and alert. She has been able to speak with relatives and her medical team, after earlier being woken briefly from an induced coma.

First Reunion With Her Daughter
Ms Stewart has seen her young daughter, August, for the first time since the attack.
Her family said the separation had been the first time the mother and daughter had been apart overnight. The reunion took place as Ms Stewart continued her recovery in hospital and prepared for further treatment.
She has also seen some of the messages sent to her family and has expressed thanks for the support she has received. She is not yet able to respond to messages, with her remaining arm affected by severe tendon and nerve damage that will require further repair and intensive rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation Ahead In Hospital
Although Ms Stewart is no longer critical, her recovery remains at an early stage.
Her family said she is expected to be in and out of surgery over the coming weeks. Her medical care is also focused on pain management, further tests, regaining movement and preparing for the next stages of rehabilitation.
Her brother Josh Stewart organised a fundraiser to support her recovery, with the money to go directly to Ms Stewart, her partner and her daughter. The funds are intended to assist with rehabilitation, prosthetics, ongoing care and the adjustments needed after the attack.
The fundraiser has raised more than $500,000 and has drawn thousands of donors.

Support Continues After Coogee Beach Attack
Ms Stewart’s family has thanked the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew and medical staff involved in her care after the Coogee attack.
Hundreds of swimmers also gathered at Coogee Beach after the incident in a show of support for Ms Stewart.
Her family said she remembers the attack in detail and may share more of her story in time. For now, her focus remains on rest, treatment and healing.
