Outrage Ensues as Coogee Cafe Raises Prices Amidst Cost of Living Crisis

Little Jack Horner, a popular beachside Coogee cafe, has elicited strong reactions among local patrons after they noticed a significant increase in prices on its menu.

The store’s decision to raise the price of its smashed avocado dish to $10.90 has left customers shocked and disappointed. Some think that amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis, when many Australians are struggling to cope with rising expenses, Little Jack Horner’s price increases have been ill-timed.

A bacon and egg breakfast, consisting of two eggs, sausage, bacon, tomatoes, roast field mushrooms, crispy smashed chats, and baked beans, now comes with a hefty price tag of $33.90.

Side dishes such as bacon, halloumi, and salmon cost $9.90, $11.90, and $14.90, respectively. Even additional servings of baked beans and mushrooms on the side come at a premium, priced at $6.90 and $13.90.

Management defended the price hikes and explained that this was the first time they have increased prices in over three years. The store cited the rising costs of rent, wages, power, and produce as the reason behind the decision.

Owner BJ McHatton highlighted that the entire industry is undergoing a “course correct” and emphasized that Little Jack Horner offers a premium experience beyond just food.

However, not all customers see the value in the increased prices. One customer, who visited the Coogee cafe over the Easter long weekend, described the prices as “ridiculous” after their bill for two breakfasts with fruit juices reached nearly $100, including a holiday surcharge. Others commented on the high breakfast prices, comparing them to what they would expect to pay for dinner.

Little Jack Horner currently holds a Google rating of 4.1 stars out of five, with over 1,400 reviews. While many customers appreciate the venue’s great views and food, there is a recurring sentiment that the menu no longer offers good value for money.

The controversy surrounding Little Jack Horner’s price increases comes at a time when housing affordability is a pressing issue in Australia.

A recent study conducted by the University of Sydney revealed that foregoing indulgences like avocado toast alone is insufficient for young people to save for their first home. Financial adviser Brenton Tong noted that despite the cost of living crisis, many Sydney residents struggle to cut back on spending due to the lifestyle they are accustomed to.

Tong highlighted that while people have reduced expenses like restaurants and movies, they still indulge in smaller luxuries such as takeaway, Saturday breakfasts, and weekend getaways, considering them a normal part of life.

Coogee’s Chargrill Charlie’s Sets Sights on Expansion with Private Equity Partnership

Private equity firm PAG Asia Capital, through its subsidiary Craveable Brands, has acquired Chargrill Charlie’s, a popular Australian food chain with its roots in Coogee.

Founded in 1989 with a single outlet along Coogee Bay Road, the restaurant’s owners are confident that this partnership will propel the chain’s growth beyond its Sydney roots and transform it into a national player.

Specializing in chargrilled chicken and home-style meals, Chargrill Charlie’s has steadily expanded its presence and currently operates 17 stores in Sydney.

In 2019, the company ventured into Melbourne with its first store and opened a second outlet the following year. With the backing of Craveable Brands, which already houses well-known fast-food brands like Red Rooster, Oporto, and Chicken Treat, Chargrill Charlie’s aims to establish its presence in every state of Australia.

Saul Sher, one of the co-owners of Chargrill Charlie’s, expressed mixed emotions about the sale after 34 years of building the business. However, he is confident that this partnership will leverage Craveable’s resources, infrastructure, and industry expertise to accelerate growth.

Mr Sher believes that the family’s original concept of elevating the traditional Australian chicken shop to a gourmet food business will thrive under the new ownership.

Chargrill Charlie’s has earned a loyal customer base by offering a core menu of chargrilled chicken, salads, vegetables, chips, and roasted potatoes. The company also ensures customer satisfaction by constantly introducing new and enticing options on its specials menu.

Despite the challenges posed by rising inflation in recent months, Chargrill Charlie’s has managed to maintain strong customer loyalty and absorb some of the price increases.

PAG Asia Capital has been actively investing in the Australian food sector, having acquired Patties Foods last year, a company renowned for its popular meat pie brand, Four’N’Twenty, as well as Herbert Adams and Nanna’s pie brands.

Craveable Brands CEO Karen Bozic expressed confidence in continuing the legacy of Chargrill Charlie’s and expanding its footprint. Bozic emphasized that the Sher family would remain closely involved in the transition, operating multiple franchise stores for at least the next 12 months.

The acquisition is expected to be finalized by 30 June 2023.

The Coogee Run Club Keeps On Going

The Coogee Run Club, organised by two young women who returned to Australia in late 2021 after a five-year stay in London, has grown steadily and energetically over the past year, with five runs each week and new members joining at each session.

Tara and Hannah, who returned to Australia from London in late 2021, were looking for a running club in the Eastern Suburbs. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to form their own.

Tara and Hannah envision the run club to be a way of life. At the Club, members should be able to run at their own pace and speed, never leaving anyone behind at the finish line.

The Coogee Run Club also does not charge any fees nor ask members to register. Interested people who want to get into running may simply join when they are ready.

“We’ll never cancel a run. Rain, hail, shine or hangover, you can always count on us to be there!” the organisers said. “With a beating energy and beaming smiles like no other, we bring all the enthusiasm, excitement and ultimate vibes to create the most welcoming, friendly and open run club out there!”

Helping Tara and Hannah out are athletes like Steve and Simona, who leads the runs on the following regular schedules:

TUESDAY 6:30 P.M.5K TO MAROUBRA + FISHBOWL
WEDNESDAY 6:30 A.M.SPEED SESH WITH STEVO
THURSDAY 6:15 A.M. 5K TO CLOVELLY + DIP N’ SIP
SUNDAY 8:00 A.M.10K TO MALABAR + DIP N’ SIP

The Coogee Run Club meet-up is at the White Steps of Coogee Beach every Tuesday, Queens Park every Wednesday, and the Rainbow Steps every Thursday and Sunday.

Gordons Bay Scuba Diving Club Proposes a Multimillion Artificial Reef on Coogee

The Gordons Bay Scuba Diving Club is hoping to receive approval for the creation of a $10 million artificial reef some four kilometres off Coogee Beach.

In his mayoral minute, Randwick City Mayor Dylan Parker expressed support for the plan to sink a navy ship that will serve as a new recreational spot for scuba diving activities as this may boost tourism and generate more income. The wreck turned artificial reef may also increase the biodiversity of marine life in Coogee, opening the doors for more marine research.

The sunken ship will be placed under a reasonable depth in the water and will not be visible on land. A fee will be collected from divers who may want to access the dive wreck whilst a fishing ban will be imposed on the site. The multimillion funding will be needed to buy, strip and clean the ship before it’s sunk into the water.

Mr Parker and the councillors discussed the proposal at a recent Council meeting, which has drawn some mixed reactions as the plans have to be backed by additional research on its environmental impact and water quality. Cr Rafaela Pandolfini filed a motion to suspend their decision until April 2023.

This is proposal is not a first from the Gordons Bay Scuba Diving Club, which has been campaigning for a dive wreck since 2005. The group has also sent letters and filed a petition to seek support from the NSW Government.

However, some locals are not in favour of the artificial reef and see no economic benefit as Coogee is already a thriving, vibrant community.

Beach Rescues Increasing in Coogee, Other Eastern Suburbs Beaches

Did you know that an average of over five beach rescues a day take place across Coogee and the rest of the Eastern Suburbs beaches? Lifeguards say that conditions in the water have become treacherous even for experienced swimmers.

A Coastal Advisory Report released for the summer months of December 2022 and January and February 2023 logged over 510 beach rescues. Lifeguard Brad Rope admitted that it has been a “summer of swell” which kept them on their toes, especially whilst looking out for inexperienced swimmers.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker, who is also a volunteer lifesaver, acknowledged that it has been a busy summer, compounded by no COVID restrictions. As rescues were up by 39 per cent, beach visitors also increased by 21 per cent.

Thus, Council launched a Float to Survive campaign as an important measure for preventing drownings in the Eastern Suburbs.

Despite this, the water remained dangerous for a number of fatalities including a 17-year-old man and a 54-year-old man who had accidents in Coogee Beach. A total of 34 deaths was recorded for this summer.

Councillor Noel D’Souza said that Randwick Council should push for more education on water safety and public beaches. Since the Eastern Suburbs have some of the best beaches in the country and will continue to attract visitors, it’s an opportunity to take advantage of letting people know that water safety exists and that the community is serious about preventing water tragedies.

Coogee Neighbours At Odds Over Puppy’s Barking, Dispute Draws Pet Ownership Debate

Peace was briefly disrupted among the residents of a Coogee apartment complex after one furious neighbour posted a note to call out another neighbour for its barking puppy. The note, shared on a private Facebook group, sparked a debate about pet ownership.

The complainant left a stickered note in a common area of the Coogee apartment complex to reprimand the pet owner, who took a photo and shared it with the group.

“Your dog is a pest while you are home,” the message read. “Your dog is a severe pest when you are out. Silence the dog you inconsiderate beasts.”

The puppy’s owner, Rachel Lee, also posted a note in response to the neighbour, stating in a sarcastic tone that she bought a zap collar for the puppy “in hopes that he STOPS the horrible behaviour.”

On Facebook, however, Ms Lee said that she was not going to use a cruel device on her 12-week-old pup.

“I’m a stay-at-home mum, so I’m home most days and if not he [the puppy] comes with me –  definitely no separation anxiety either. He just barks because he’s a puppy and we’re trying to teach him. The person that wrote that sticker is obviously a psychopath.”

Some neighbours defended Ms Lee’s situation as untrained pups naturally bark. They chided the complaining neighbour for leaving a rude note anonymous instead of making the effort to talk to Ms Lee in person.

“They went out of their way to print a sticker and yet couldn’t go next door to chat in person,” one local said.

However, others agreed with the complainant because residents “need peace and quiet in their own homes.” The incident raised issues not only about pet ownership but also respect and kindness.

Randwick City Council encourages pet owners in the Eastern Suburbs to become familiar with the state’s Companion Animal Act. Under this act’s part 5 of the special provisions relating to the control of dogs, persistent dog barking may be considered a nuisance if it “interferes with the peace, comfort or convenience of any person in any other premises.”

“Owning a dog comes with certain responsibilities that ensure your pet’s safety as well as the safety of our community and environment,” the Council stated.

Lost and Found: Elaborate Coogee Beach Proposal Goes Viral

What was supposed to be a romantic and elaborate proposal organised at Coogee Beach turned into an unfortunate incident that has gone viral on social media after the bride-to-be dropped and lost the ring on the sand.

Zay, the groom-to-be, hired an event planner for the perfect engagement that had an elaborate display of fairy lights to brighten up the beach. A portion of the lights even spelled “marry me” and brought quite a magical touch.

As Zay got down on his knees to ask Sai, his girlfriend, to marry him, a huge crowd of people — composed of friends, family and onlookers — cheered on. But a few moments later, most of the crowd could be seen scanning the beach for the missing ring.

One onlooker, Jessica Condonn, filmed the whole thing and posted the video on TikTok, receiving nearly three million views.

“Pro tip from my fiancé: don’t propose with a loose ring on the sand,” Sai said in the comments of Jessica’s post. She also posted her sentiments about the Coogee Beach proposal on her Instagram.

Sai also confirmed that they found the engagement ring after a 20-minute search. The couple said that they didn’t expect the proposal to generate news and go viral. TikTok users suggested to anyone planning another Coogee Beach proposal to have someone with a metal detector on the site in case of a similar mishap.

Meanwhile, Zay and Sai are ruling out a wedding at the beach and will instead have their big celebration at a destination wedding spot, without the sand, in Bangkok.

Alarming Rat Infestation in Coogee Triggers Calls to Action

Did you know that pest controllers have killed over 500 rats inside just one complex in Coogee Beach? Coogee residents are calling for immediate action and better pest control to address the alarming rat infestation problem impacting public health.

One new Coogee resident was shocked to see rats on the road, the bushes and the grass next to his multi-million dollar home. Philip Jajou said no one warned him about this issue when he purchased his new mansion.

Mr Jajou posted his rat encounter on TikTok, where many commenters remarked that rats have been a part of Coogee for decades. However, they also said that the new homeowner should have been told by his real estate agent or did his due diligence before buying a house in Coogee.

@philipjajou Why didn’t anyone warn me ? #rat #mouse #beach #storytime #storytimes #fyp #disgusting #animals ♬ Funny Song – Cavendish Music

Coogee residents have also complained about the enormous size of the rats, prompting local mums to suggest installing signs to be posted across the suburbs, especially at the kids’ playgrounds.

Coogee is one of many suburbs in Sydney with a rat infestation problem. In Surry Hills, these pests can also be seen anywhere, even in broad daylight. It’s a critical issue that has drawn comparison with New York’s worst rat problem so much so that its mayor had to hire a Rat Tsar to control the infestation.

“I am regularly approached by community members alarmed by the number of rats they see in the City of Sydney,” said Cr Yvonne Weldon.

“I’m also regularly approached by residents who have experienced delayed and missed waste collections. I appreciate how deeply frustrating this can be.

“It’s no surprise then that Sydney’s rat infestation is only getting worse. It’s a serious public health issue.

“Council needs to look at all available methods of rat eradication and control strategies. We must also act urgently to implement further improvements in waste management services.”

Meanwhile, Randwick City Council acknowledged an increase in complaints but could not provide data on the rat infestation.

As stated on its official site:

“Council will only implement vermin treatments where an infestation or risk to public health is on public land under the control of Randwick City Council. Any infestation involving private land will be the responsibility of the landowner or occupier to control by engaging the services of a licensed pest controller.”
