Vehicle Driver Gives New Meaning to ‘Double Parking’ on Carr St in Coogee

A photo of a vehicle occupying two parking bays on Carr St in Coogee has gone viral on social media, giving new meaning to the term ‘double parking’ and spurring discussions on parking in the area.

The incident occurred one Saturday morning in June 2023, when the car was spotted parked haphazardly on Carr Street, which has one of the closest rows of parking spaces to the beach.

The photo, accompanied by the caption, “Busy Saturday morning, entitled or what,” quickly gained traction on a local group on Facebook, sparking a range of responses from the members. Many locals deemed the act as an example of selfish behaviour, particularly given the idyllic conditions of the day. However, opinions have been divided on the matter.

Some individuals argued in defence of the driver, expressing frustration with the narrowness of the parking lines. They claimed that whilst they understand the concept of entitled parking, the spaces themselves should be more accommodating.

These individuals shared personal anecdotes of instances where they unintentionally parked incorrectly due to the adjacent car’s poor parking, only for that car to subsequently leave, creating the false impression of intentional wrongdoing on their part.

The incident has highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding parking facilities and the need for more spacious parking bays.

Although some members of the public condemned the luxury vehicle driver for their thoughtless parking, others called for a re-evaluation of the size and layout of parking spaces to prevent such incidents from happening again.

As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen whether this incident will prompt any changes in parking regulations or lead to a broader conversation about parking infrastructure in Coogee and other areas.

Louie Aims to Keep the Coogee Summer Vibe Alive All Year

If you thought Coogee’s beach buzz couldn’t get any better, think again. Louie, the newest addition in the seaside suburb of Coogee’s dining scene, is keeping the summer energy alive even during winter, with its contemporary Italian fare and relaxed ambience.

Nestled just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Louie has been turning heads since its quiet opening in April 2023.

Local resident Chris Lu, the mastermind behind popular establishments like Happy as Larry and Flower Child cafes, is the driving force behind this restaurant feels. It feels like a homecoming for Lu, who has been on the lookout for the perfect spot to create a local gathering place.

The restaurant’s design exudes a minimalist charm. The stunning arched windows lining the front facade allow the refreshing sea breeze to sweep through on warm evenings. A small green wall painting of “Louie” serves as the only hint that you’ve found the right place.

Louie offers a menu of refined classics meant for sharing, along with inventive twists on beloved Australian favourites. The restaurant takes pride in its homemade offerings.

Their fluffy sourdough, often served warm with a sprinkle of pecorino and truffle butter, is baked in-house. Additionally, they craft all their pasta from scratch. The restaurant maintains a solid commitment to minimizing waste, using every part of the animals they butcher and incorporating locally sourced produce into their weekly menu updates.

Whilst their menu features rotating dishes, a few favourites have become mainstays. Start off with succulent lamb skewers and grilled king prawns, then dive into the indulgent slow-cooked Wagyu brisket and porcini ragu pappardelle or the vibrant blue swimmer crab and prawn campanelle with cherry tomatoes and chilli oil. Sharing both dishes with a date is highly recommended for the ultimate dining experience.

Koojay Corroboree Captivates Audience on Coogee Beach during National Reconciliation Week

The Koojay Corroboree, a vibrant celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, enthralled a crowd on Coogee Beach as part of the National Reconciliation Week 2023 festivities. Despite the windy morning weather, the rain held off, allowing the captivating performances of dance and storytelling to take centre stage.

The event, which took place on Friday, 26 May 2023, kicked off National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 1 June 2023). This is a time for all Australians to embrace shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and contribute to the national reconciliation effort.

The day commenced with a smoking ceremony led by Tim Bishop to cleanse the area around Coogee Beach and welcome the visitors.

Performers of traditional and contemporary dances that told of the tales of Australia’s First Nations People included the Jannawi Dance Clan, Gamay Dancers (Gujaga Foundation), Saltwater Dancers (Chifley Public School), Warada Dance Group (Matraville Soldiers’ Settlement Public School) and the Doonooch Dancers.

The Koojay Corroboree, first held in 2015, has become a significant event for the local community, recognising the continuation of local Aboriginal culture and knowledge. While the event was not held in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety concerns, the return of the Corroboree last year was met with enthusiasm and appreciation.

The Koojay Corroboree on Coogee Beach serves as a testament to the resilience, beauty, and rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Through events like this, Australia takes steps toward a more inclusive and reconciled future, where respect and understanding prevail.

Outrage Ensues as Coogee Cafe Raises Prices Amidst Cost of Living Crisis

Little Jack Horner, a popular beachside Coogee cafe, has elicited strong reactions among local patrons after they noticed a significant increase in prices on its menu.

The store’s decision to raise the price of its smashed avocado dish to $10.90 has left customers shocked and disappointed. Some think that amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis, when many Australians are struggling to cope with rising expenses, Little Jack Horner’s price increases have been ill-timed.

A bacon and egg breakfast, consisting of two eggs, sausage, bacon, tomatoes, roast field mushrooms, crispy smashed chats, and baked beans, now comes with a hefty price tag of $33.90.

Side dishes such as bacon, halloumi, and salmon cost $9.90, $11.90, and $14.90, respectively. Even additional servings of baked beans and mushrooms on the side come at a premium, priced at $6.90 and $13.90.

Management defended the price hikes and explained that this was the first time they have increased prices in over three years. The store cited the rising costs of rent, wages, power, and produce as the reason behind the decision.

Owner BJ McHatton highlighted that the entire industry is undergoing a “course correct” and emphasized that Little Jack Horner offers a premium experience beyond just food.

However, not all customers see the value in the increased prices. One customer, who visited the Coogee cafe over the Easter long weekend, described the prices as “ridiculous” after their bill for two breakfasts with fruit juices reached nearly $100, including a holiday surcharge. Others commented on the high breakfast prices, comparing them to what they would expect to pay for dinner.

Little Jack Horner currently holds a Google rating of 4.1 stars out of five, with over 1,400 reviews. While many customers appreciate the venue’s great views and food, there is a recurring sentiment that the menu no longer offers good value for money.

The controversy surrounding Little Jack Horner’s price increases comes at a time when housing affordability is a pressing issue in Australia.

A recent study conducted by the University of Sydney revealed that foregoing indulgences like avocado toast alone is insufficient for young people to save for their first home. Financial adviser Brenton Tong noted that despite the cost of living crisis, many Sydney residents struggle to cut back on spending due to the lifestyle they are accustomed to.

Tong highlighted that while people have reduced expenses like restaurants and movies, they still indulge in smaller luxuries such as takeaway, Saturday breakfasts, and weekend getaways, considering them a normal part of life.

Coogee’s Chargrill Charlie’s Sets Sights on Expansion with Private Equity Partnership

Private equity firm PAG Asia Capital, through its subsidiary Craveable Brands, has acquired Chargrill Charlie’s, a popular Australian food chain with its roots in Coogee.

Founded in 1989 with a single outlet along Coogee Bay Road, the restaurant’s owners are confident that this partnership will propel the chain’s growth beyond its Sydney roots and transform it into a national player.

Specializing in chargrilled chicken and home-style meals, Chargrill Charlie’s has steadily expanded its presence and currently operates 17 stores in Sydney.

In 2019, the company ventured into Melbourne with its first store and opened a second outlet the following year. With the backing of Craveable Brands, which already houses well-known fast-food brands like Red Rooster, Oporto, and Chicken Treat, Chargrill Charlie’s aims to establish its presence in every state of Australia.

Saul Sher, one of the co-owners of Chargrill Charlie’s, expressed mixed emotions about the sale after 34 years of building the business. However, he is confident that this partnership will leverage Craveable’s resources, infrastructure, and industry expertise to accelerate growth.

Mr Sher believes that the family’s original concept of elevating the traditional Australian chicken shop to a gourmet food business will thrive under the new ownership.

Chargrill Charlie’s has earned a loyal customer base by offering a core menu of chargrilled chicken, salads, vegetables, chips, and roasted potatoes. The company also ensures customer satisfaction by constantly introducing new and enticing options on its specials menu.

Despite the challenges posed by rising inflation in recent months, Chargrill Charlie’s has managed to maintain strong customer loyalty and absorb some of the price increases.

PAG Asia Capital has been actively investing in the Australian food sector, having acquired Patties Foods last year, a company renowned for its popular meat pie brand, Four’N’Twenty, as well as Herbert Adams and Nanna’s pie brands.

Craveable Brands CEO Karen Bozic expressed confidence in continuing the legacy of Chargrill Charlie’s and expanding its footprint. Bozic emphasized that the Sher family would remain closely involved in the transition, operating multiple franchise stores for at least the next 12 months.

The acquisition is expected to be finalized by 30 June 2023.

Coogee Surf Life Saving Club Launches Comprehensive Beach Safety Program

A beach safety program has been implemented at Coogee Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), as part of ongoing efforts by lifesavers to enhance community education and safety along the coastline.

The Beach Ocean Safe (BOS) Program is an opportunity for those from a wide range of backgrounds, specifically international students and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to develop and refine their ocean skills in a nurturing environment.

It’s initially a collaboration between the University of NSW Health Unit and Coogee SLSC’s Community Education team, with plans to expand across the state.

Statistics presented in the 2022 NSW Coastal Safety Report indicate that more than half of those who drowned in NSW between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022 were from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

As a means of directly addressing this, the first in what is hoped to be a significant series of programs was completed at Coogee Surf Life Saving Club earlier this month, with support from Tamarama SLSC and Cronulla SLSC.

The course was delivered over two weekends in late March before participants ‘graduated’ on 1 April from the program. Primary learnings were how to enter the ocean and manage waves; how to dive under waves; and how to float, tread water and dive under the water.

This was supported by CPR and First Aid training and theory sessions on rip currents, waves, and beach hazards.

“Since I came here to Australia, I’ve never been in the water because it was a bit scary for me,” participant Eli Talebi said.

“I learned many new skills. I learned how to do CPR. I also learned how to get in the water safe. And during the session, I was feeling completely safe because there were lifesavers that were looking after us.”

Indeed, more than 20 lifesavers from Coogee SLSC alone attended the program as support, many under 18 and enthusiastically passing on their knowledge.

Doug Hawkins, the Lead Trainer of the BOS Program at Coogee SLSC, expressed his pride in the program’s success and the increased ocean skills and knowledge demonstrated by the participants throughout the course.

The Coogee Run Club Keeps On Going

The Coogee Run Club, organised by two young women who returned to Australia in late 2021 after a five-year stay in London, has grown steadily and energetically over the past year, with five runs each week and new members joining at each session.

Tara and Hannah, who returned to Australia from London in late 2021, were looking for a running club in the Eastern Suburbs. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to form their own.

Tara and Hannah envision the run club to be a way of life. At the Club, members should be able to run at their own pace and speed, never leaving anyone behind at the finish line.

The Coogee Run Club also does not charge any fees nor ask members to register. Interested people who want to get into running may simply join when they are ready.

“We’ll never cancel a run. Rain, hail, shine or hangover, you can always count on us to be there!” the organisers said. “With a beating energy and beaming smiles like no other, we bring all the enthusiasm, excitement and ultimate vibes to create the most welcoming, friendly and open run club out there!”

Helping Tara and Hannah out are athletes like Steve and Simona, who leads the runs on the following regular schedules:

TUESDAY 6:30 P.M.5K TO MAROUBRA + FISHBOWL
WEDNESDAY 6:30 A.M.SPEED SESH WITH STEVO
THURSDAY 6:15 A.M. 5K TO CLOVELLY + DIP N’ SIP
SUNDAY 8:00 A.M.10K TO MALABAR + DIP N’ SIP

The Coogee Run Club meet-up is at the White Steps of Coogee Beach every Tuesday, Queens Park every Wednesday, and the Rainbow Steps every Thursday and Sunday.
